YouthSMART Youth Mental Health Summit 2018

About the Summit

Canadian Mental Health Association – Calgary Region and its partners would like to invite your school to participate in the YouthSMART – Youth Mental Health Summit on Thursday October 19, 2017.

This summit brings together students and teachers from various local junior high and senior high schools to learn about mental health, mental illness and stigma, while challenging common stereotypes and misconceptions. Hosted by CMHA Calgary’s YouthSMART, in partnership with the The Sheldon Kennedy Child Advocacy Centre, the summit features large group presentations, speakers, experiential exercise, discussions and action planning.

Research has shown that the summit model is one of the most powerful ways to change youth attitudes related to mental health and mental illness. The success of the summit model stems from a meaningful combination of three key methods for shifting attitudes – education, contact and taking action.

Education: Throughout the summit, participants hear stories of hope from people who have recovered or are managing a mental illness. This method of contact-based education has been identified as one of the most powerful models of learning. Speakers are relatable to youth, well-trained and are in a place of recovery.

Contact: The summit connects participants to individuals with lived experience and key community organizations. Students experience first-hand the importance of building a strong school-based mental health network.

Taking Action: Students will work together to plan awareness activities to take back to their own school. Participants are provided with resources packages, as well as personalized support from a qualified CMHA Education Specialist to help them create fun and engaging activities to bring the mental health message back to their peers.

CMHA would like to invite up to eight (8) students plus two teachers or guidance counsellors from your school to attend this important day free of cost.

Registration for the summit can be made here and must be completed by October 12, 2017. The event is on a first-come, first-served basis. Once we reach capacity, registration will close. Please register early to avoid disappointment.
